Identity Crisis

(by Charles Stanley)
1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
How often do we evaluate ourselves based on our feelings, rather than what God says? The problem is, our feelings change. From moment to moment, we never know what circumstances will test our faith.

Maybe today is “one of those days.” The car didn’t start, the boss has been breathing down your neck, the mortgage payment’s due, and money is short. During times like these, it can be difficult to maintain good judgment. But remember, Satan will do whatever He can to distract your attention from the Lord. The Enemy knows He can drag you down by directing your focus toward circumstances.

What do the Scriptures say about us? Today’s passage calls believers “a chosen race,” “a royal priesthood,” and “God’s own possession.” And our purpose is to “proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called [us] out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

How encouraging it is to know we’ve been called into God’s “marvelous light.” But without help, we’re unable to escape the “darkness” of our circumstances. As believers, we’re empowered by the Holy Spirit. He enables us to overcome disheartening situations and Satan’s deceptive tactics.

Circumstances may seem unbearable. But remember the promise of 1 Corinthians 6:20. (For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's)
The Lord purchased you with a price. Wake up each morning with the knowledge that you’re valuable to your Father. Trust in His Word, not your feelings. And allow the Holy Spirit to change your view of yourself.

I so needed that today!!! Things for me are going bad to worst it seems. when last week was I thought smooth sailing all of a sunnden bomb~ needed new brakes for my car... did not have the money ( still don`t really). some of my jobs are ending for no reason I can see. God gives and He takes away. My future looks so bleak to me. Sin in my life I can`t let go of.
My friend all of a sudden is having a problem with me. Satan is really having a hay day with me) Or maybe which I think it is more God is having a a major over haul day with me and things I need to change.

But why does it have to happen all of a sudden like this?

I listened to Charels Stanley on Sunday and man I love that guy and his teaching from the holy spirit.

I know same song and dance. when am I ever going to learn?

if anyone feels led please pray I feel very alone and devestated right now.

God at my age I should be married, or have a good paying job and all that jazz. I know maybe not true but that is how I feel right now.

right now I do not know what to do and the worste part is is when things suck like this I DO NOT turn to God I trun away from Him. I know I should be clinging to Him but something is holding me back.

well thats all sorry to put a damper on anything.

i just went through a doozy, too, lizzie. and i learned the most important lesson of my life, that when we want to turn away is when we need to turn to Him the most. You've heard the old expression, God helps those who help themselves. well we know that's not true, what's true is, God helps those who come to the end of themselves.

sometimes He takes away everything outward, because He requires us to look inward, and upward.

this too shall pass.

I shudder to think of what their bus must smell like after they're all sweaty and bundled up in all those clothes. Ewwwww.

well when they were here in February, Louie was making fun of us because it was 60 and everybody was in jackets, scarves and Ugg boots. So Jesse got a scarf and he was wearing it onstage. so louie said jesse was looking cool with his scarf -- you can connect the dots from there. hee!

at least chris wasn't wearing his customary two shirts and a jacket in eighty degree heat.

no, i didn't go -- sheesh it was $80 and I only wanted to see Chris and Francis. that was a little too much $$.

Yeah, he's got a scarf on in Rands' video of SoulFEST. Now I KNOW that it was too hot for a scarf; it was in the 90s and humid in Portland! Perhaps that's why he was only wearing an undershirt...

Eliz - the only person who has the right to tell you if you should or should not be married is God.

Sunny, my pastor has a huge problem with the phrase "God helps those who help themselves." Mentions that it's not Biblical at least once a month. I think it has something to do with that we're New Englanders, independent, and have to do everything ourselves. Not that explains anything about me... lol

Ladies, anyone know where Gail's been?

girlies, i've been previewing clips from the altar and the door.

this is one of the best lyrics i've ever heard, from the song somewhere in the middle. I don't know who wrote it but i'm assuming mark hall had something to do with it.

Fearless warriors in a picket fence
Reckless abandon wrapped in common sense
Deep water faith in the shallow end
We are caught in middle
With eyes wide open to the differences
The God we want and the God who is
But will we trade our dreams for His
Or are we caught in the middle

Hey Miranda - just look at the bombin pics on your blog! hmmmm... There's that scarf again. hmmmm... crowder had a treasure hunt at some fests (which is so cool) maybe this summer is unofficially 'the mystery of the scarf tour' for ct. ;)
Ok now you did you see how long Jesse's hair is? How does the man's hair grow so fast???? What is his secret? I mean he just had total buzz cut in January (remember people werent sure if it was him or not at p07 because his hair was so short?) I wish my hair grew that fast! because... my previous hairdresser was in town last weekend and .... turns out she's a little rusty :\ .... I said I wanted just a few long layers (key word here being long)... and she accidentally cut the first layer wayyy to short :\ thus the other layers kind of had to be short... and the resulting cut does not resemble at all what I was looking for *sigh*. wish my hair grew as fast as Jesse's.... in time.....in time...
back on track- great pics Fog!:)

HAHA You are so funny!! Yeah it was different seeing a scarf on him but I think it looks really cool haha it gives that white shirt some spunk lol. And yes about Jesse's hair! I have always wondered how it grows so fast I mean each time I have seen him it's either really long or short or medium haha He earns my vote for the fastest hair grower lol lol

Sorry to hear your hair is a little shorter than you wanted : (
Well glad you liked my pictures! I actually found some press photo's on Flickr that are really good too here is the link!

I just have this random thing on my mind from New Song Cafe...I thought it was funny. Well Chris was beginning to talk about Amazing Grace and William Wilberforce and then he was like hey did anybody see the movie? And then after he was like well we were talking one time in the bus and Daniel was like hey it would be so cool if they made t-shirts that said- "May The WilberFORCE be with you" lol lol And Cqhris was laughing and so was everyone else I just found that to be so funny! Sorry this is very random but random things come to me when I am on the computer thinking about you all at a late hour lol So I felt like I needed to tell you about that!!!

Okay well I am leaving now much love to you all : ) : )

no offence Chris.. but I have a shirt like that buttons just like that.( the white one) and kid you not, it is green stripped.

thanks for the pic Mirannda.

and I would say they probably go to a laundry mat.? or they send their laundry out? but they might have a washer dryer on the bus that would be cool and save on quarters.

okay that was too much information.

and yes, i noticed that about jesse's hair before. doves 2005 it was really short and then by summer (it seemed) clear down to his shoulders. i was like, whoa. that's scary fast.

well i got my Hillsong conference CD's today so I'm going to give a listen! they sent me an order form and some of the other sessions that weren't available online when I ordered, are available now. there's a songwriting session with chris, i'm going to have to get that.

Rands, that is so funny about the T-shirts! I can just hear those guys kicking that idea around and laughing about it.

Which reminds me...I STILL want an "I am Not Famous" t-shirt! How do I get one of those?!!

I noticed that about Jesse's hair, too! How can guys grow their hair so fast? Kimmer, I can relate about the hair...only I wanted mine shorter on purpose...it was down to my shoulder blades and earlier this summer and one day I just wanted something different so I had it cut to my shoulders...and of course now I want the long hair back! It's growing, but not as fast as Jesse's seems to be! Sigh.

Sunny, I like the new CC song, too. I'm looking forward to their new CD. My favorite song of theirs is "American Dream" because I know SO many people who are living just like that song describes and I think of them every time i hear that song. I also love "What if His People Prayed." I loved when I saw them in concert and everyone yelled "What if the family turned to Jesus...stopped asking OPRAH what to do?" I love that part.

Well, I'll stop rambling now! :)

well i'm really disappointed -- hillsong's marketing ploy is a little dishonest, i think. this session said "bryan houston and chris tomlin." well that sounds to me like they'll both be talking. but apparently, chris was just providing the music here and the music isn't included. I knew the music wasn't included, but I figured he talked if they listed his name.

IF the music isn't included in the CD, then the musicians' name shouldn't be listed on the breakout. how many other people make this mistake? i had to pay international shipping for this.

i'm glad i figured this out before i ordered the other things that list chris. i feel fleeced. they're going to hear from me.

have you guys seen the show iCaught? it was on abc tonight and mostly was about different videos that have in one way or another found their way onto utube it's was interesting.. there was one shot during an african safari, one a wedding party who did the thriller dance, another by a guy who used some morphing software to celebrate women in classic art which was cool. then they had a part on how some people have successfully used the internet )like myspace to help soved a crime --which wasnt really recommended) anyway the show was interesting.

Oh Higgie- the shirts - every now and then I'll see a stack over to the side of the merchandise table but usually just a size or two... kind of a fluke when you see them... I LOVED CC first cd; had to tease a friend with that oprah line... hehehe

Hey Sunny
thats cool you'll have to let us know how they are, did you say you got cds?
ohhh just read your last post - that would be disappointing. you know i wondered about that on their website; i thought it seemed a bit unclear.... if you feel strongly about it, and dont want the cd, I would write them and say you would like to return it for your money back including all shipping expenses, because they did not set the right expectation regarding the content of the cd in their advertising. That by listing CT, there was implication that his portion of the evening would be included..... Maybe they will be good it?

Tue Aug 07, 10:22:00 PM CDT
Blogger higgie08 said...

Sunny, that is really disappointing and I think you should do what Kmr suggested and see if they'll give you your money back. It isn't right for them to imply that CT's performance was on there if it wasn't included on the DVD.

KMR!! if you ever see those shirts at another CT show PLEASE PLEASE get me one (medium) and I'll send you the money! I have wanted one forever and even looked on eBay and cannot find them. :(

I have typed this blog twice and keep losing it – I even copied it last time and I keep getting the “error” report. So here we go again!

Jackie, most of the venues the guys play are churches. Even a church as big as Saddleback doesn’t have public laundry facilities. hmmm . . . maybe the pastors’ wives volunteer to do 15 guys’ laundry when they come in! hee! most guys don’t like other people doing their laundry. Moving on . . . .

My rent is going up over $100, so I’m moving closer to work – which means I’ll be looking for a church in Costa Mesa. (higgie, that means I won’t be auditioning at Saddleback . . . I don’t want to drive 20 miles for church). I’m going to check out Rock Harbor this weekend, I hear it’s a bombin’ place to worship.

Hey Jess,
I'm glad you picked up on the story about the hostages and let us know so we can pray because I think that is what needs to be our main focus here ....

but I'm sorry... I dont think that blog seems to be very accurate in some of its content. They seem to be criticizing Christian news organizations (which are much smaller and limited in resources than their secular counterparts)saying their silence and non-coverage of this is deafening. The truth is, a regular search on the CBN site revealed scores articles regarding this hostage sitation - (at a quick glance, dated July 21, July 22, July 23, July 25, July 26, July 28, July 29, July 31, Aug 1, Aug3, Aug 6, Aug 7)... there were more pages but I think these articles show that CBN has been covering this story quite a bit. Here is the first page search results on the words 'korean hostage' on the cbn site.

a quick search on
Christianity today yeilded some articles dating from between july 20-aug 3 although i find CBN's archives to be a lot easier to navigate. anyway, I dont why that blog makes it sounds like cbn has not been covering this at all - but no matter how much Christian news organizations are covering it, I dont happen to see their broadcasts but once in a blue moon as they are not on tv that often & are on at odd hours. I catch the news I see on local affiliates, cnn or fox... I wish we were seeing more coverage of this in the mainline media organizations too.

I am very glad that you got wind of it and let us know about it because I think that is the really important thing...
girlies if you would like to pray about this, we could
-focus on praying that the hearts of the captors would be softened
-that God's favor would rest on these hostages and that they would be set free
-and His hand would cover this situation to a bring about a safe release as has happened in some hostage situations in the past.

Thanks again Jess for letting us know about this hostage crisis.. and please do let us know if you become aware of a change in their situation
blessings~

I hope those people are found safely.

i hope so too kimmer. sometimes i'm just, oh, they have to be dead by now, and then i remember how big our God is and that nothing is too big for him. like when i saw that school bus tottering on the bridge in minnesota, and i thought oh, they're never going to be able to get those kids out safely. and the next thing you hear, the kids were all safe. it's like the Lord was saying to me, "you were saying?" I'm like the disciples, crying out for him to save me when I'm already saved. i'm so grateful that He forgives me for those moments.
